Gin & Tonic

The exact history of the G&T has been lost in time. What we do know is that gin was drunk for medicinal purposes from the 1600s and before that it was used against malaria. The other half of the drink, the tonics, were first marketed during the 1850s. In other words, it's a drink that has stood the test of time!

Tonic grew in popularity in the British colonies, especially in India, which became clear when Schweppes launched their first tonic in 1870. They branded it Indian Tonic Water, and since the wealthier people drank massive amounts of gin in Raj it has been accepted that the Gin and Tonic emerged here and was drunk in part to ward off malaria.

Even though this is not the reason most people drink it today, its popularity has lasted through the years. Maybe simply because it's one of the easiest and best mixed drinks!
