World Cocktail Day

This Saturday is a special day for us cocktail geeks: World Cocktail Day. But why are we celebrating it?

On May 13th, 1806, an upstate New York newspaper called The Balance and Columbian Repository, published the first known definition of the word cock-tail: "A stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters".

So where does the name come from? Surprisingly enough it might have to do with racehorses. The original use of the word was to describe a horse with a docked tail, which stuck up rather than hung down – this meant that the racehorse was mixed, not a thoroughbred. A cocktail hence came to mean a 'mixed' drink.

How to celebrate?

A fitting way would be to enjoy an Old Fashioned, the drink that most closely matches the Balance's description of a cocktail. Barkonsult will be serving Rum cocktails at Stockholm Rum Fest all day! Hope to see you there on Saturday
